This performance is an excerpt from "David Holt's State of Music," a new program produced for North Carolina Public Television (UNC-TV) that premiered January 29, 2015. Rhiannon Giddens of the Carolina Chocolate Drops (and many recordings) based her lyrics for this song on a slave memoir.

What stewardship? All those oily 401K's got this to show for it. We are just watching while our oil industry destroys the California coastline. I cannot abide.

Discovering for yourself is the best way to internalize. Chomsky speaks in formed paragraphs, amazing.

we're going to entertain the genocide bill. Our legal system exists fundamentally to keep the peace. Yet this law makes me want to prepare myself to shoot back. To even consider such a bill is to make a mockery of the legal system not mention our general social morality. The debate itself is oppressive and harmful. Shame on us. We wouldn't entertain a kill the blacks bill. We wouldn't entertain a kill the Jews bill. But we're gonna allow a kill the gays bill. Fuck this noise.

I have a friend who is undergoing severe suffering. She has severely disfigured herself in an attempt to relieve the symptoms. It is extremely tragic. It is also affecting those around her quite a bit. I am not sure how this will end up, but I hope that love, support, compassion, and healing are what lies ahead instead of the extreme suffering that has transpired. She is an extremely compassionate, loving, just, and beautiful human being vexed with what amounts to an evolutionary disorder and is suffering greatly. I hope for the strength to be supportive and healing.

Just watched the ISS sail south west to north east across the sky shortly after sunset at 6:36pm. It looked like a bright star moving quickly across the sky. Took roughly three minutes to zoom out of view at 18,000 MPH. Amazed. There were some kids we pointed it out too. I was tempted to say it was Santa but I wanted them to know it was the ISS. They thanked me.

"Now I wanted to say something about the fact that we have lived over these last two or three summers with agony and we have seen our cities going up in flames. And I would be the first to say that I am still committed to militant, powerful, massive, nonĀ-violence as the most potent weapon in grappling with the problem from a direct action point of view. I'm absolutely convinced that a riot merely intensifies the fears of the white community while relieving the guilt. And I feel that we must always work with an effective, powerful weapon and method that brings about tangible results. But it is not enough for me to stand before you tonight and condemn riots. It would be morally irresponsible for me to do that without, at the same time, condemning the contingent, intolerable conditions that exist in our society. These conditions are the things that cause individuals to feel that they have no other alternative than to engage in violent rebellions to get attention. And I must say tonight that a riot is the language of the unheard. And what is it America has failed to hear? It has failed to hear that the plight of the negro poor has worsened over the last twelve or fifteen years. It has failed to hear that the promises of freedom and justice have not been met. And it has failed to hear that large segments of white society are more concerned about tranquility and the status quo than about justice and humanity." - Martin Luther King, March 14th 1968, three weeks before he was slain.

Bombing ISIL will do nothing but tactically contain ISIL while swelling their recruitment ranks. ISIL wants us to engage with them militarily for this and other reasons.

We need additionally/instead to stop their supply of money, weapons, and fighters.

To stop the supply of money, we need to pressure Saud to end their (private) support of ISIL and support of Syrian rebel fighters. To stop the supply of arms, we need to stop arming FSA, stop Saud from arming ISIL and Syrian factions, and restart diplomacy with Syria, Iran, and Russia to pressure Assad to reduce (it worked with chemical weapons) and engage with united arms embargo to calm Syrian civil war. This could help with Ukraine by building trust. Those moderate rebels we plan to train and arm are the ones who sold those hostages to ISIL. To stop the supply of fighters in Iraq we need to work with Iraq to end the Shia oppression of Sunnis in Iraq.

If we only bomb, without implementing other solutions, it WILL get worse. ISIL is not currently a credible threat to our homeland, but if we keep escalating without any other approach to stop growth, it sure could become one.
