Eight Canadians killed in Lebanon
Eight Canadians were killed in Lebanon on Sunday, Foreign Minister Peter MacKay told CTV television."All we can say is that there are eight confirmed casualties and six who have been critically injured," he said. Asked to confirm whether this meant eight Canadians had died, he replied: "That's the information that we have to date."

My father and his friends helped design Beirut Airport . . .
". . . right after WWII as the colonial era was starting to come to anend and the UN was being born, Israel was being reestablished in the region, etc. After his death as we went thru his papers I read the notes back and forth from him at Pan Am and his friends at MEA they were all so hopeful for the future. They were not an enemy to anyone. They were establishing trade and air-routes between all the countries in the region and the world. Her fathers work:
Don't you understand your bombing your allies?
You're bombing your allies!
Hezbollah is not there. Hezbollah is Shia. Uneducated, impoverished, frightened easily led village people from Bekáa, You are bombing and blockading Sunni, Christian and Druze.
Rafic Hariri is a CIVILLIAN Airport.
My father's old apartment building is a pile of rubble, his supermarket is a bomb crater that would swallow a city bus. The everyday people in Gaza are running out of food, there is no electricity for ANYONE in the city. What has happened to my bother's apartment with the beautiful pink flowers climbing up the side trellis? What about the nursery school? The family clinic? The job training programs for widows? Where are his co-workers?
But somehow the guerillas fighters, they are fine, they are fat and well fed, them you haven't touched.
If you bomb and shoot at people who just happen to be in your way enough,no matter how righteous your cause, they are no longer your allies, they are just people who tolerate you. They are people who will not hurt you but they will not go out of their way to help you either.
Sometimes it's too much to keep seeing everything destroyed over and over again." -

Israel, Hezbollah trade violent blows in Lebanon
' Israel again bombarded Lebanon's airport and main roads in the most intensive offensive against the country in 24 years. For the first time, it struck the crowded Shiite neighborhood of south Beirut around Hezbollah's headquarters, toppling overpasses and sheering facades off apartment buildings. Concrete from balconies smashed into parked cars, and car alarms set off by the blasts blared for hours. The toll in three days of clashes rose to 73 killed in Lebanon and at least 12Israelis, as international alarm grew over the fighting, and oil prices rose to above $78 a barrel. The U.N. Security Council held an emergency session on the violence, and Lebanon accused Israel of launching "a widespread barbaric aggression." In addition to the fighting in Lebanon, Israel pressed ahead with its Gaza Strip offensive against Hamas, striking the Palestinian economy ministry offices early today.

' Israel steeply escalated its military campaign against Hizbollah in Lebanon yesterday with a series of air strikes that left more than 35 Lebanese civilians dead, including a single strike on a convoy of families fleeing the fighting in a village near Tyre in the south of the country that killed more than 20 people, most of them children. "LL's mother is in Lebanon. She's in the northern part of the country, which is marginally safer than the southern part... although the whole country is about the size of Delaware, so that's a pretty slim margin. She's already evacuated her regular apartment to hide out in a "chalet" (which is what we Americans would call a "studio apartment" that happens to be near the beach if I understand this correctly), which is a good thing because her neighborhood was either bombed or hit by rocket fire today. A good thing, yes, but not nearly good enough. There are already Israeli warships off the tiny little coastline of Lebanon, and if the Syrians and/or Iranians come into this, they could easily wind up coming through the north with a resultant intensification of attacks back and forth between ALL of the butchers involved in this latest round of traditional Middle Eastern stupidity — butchers who are ever ready and willing to put the heads of innocent people on their chopping blocks in the service of their ideologies. They're all fucking animals, and I personally blame all of them — Israel, Hizballah, Iran, Syria, the lot of them — for what's happening there now.Read the rest
LL's mother holds dual US and Lebanese citizenship. She really doesn't care much for the US; it's not a political thing, just a question of very different lifestyle that she doesn't like. Moreover, she's an elderly woman who just completed treatment for cancer a couple of months ago and is on all sorts of medication, and she has no US medical insurance. For all of these reasons, she's refusing to leave Lebanon. She won't evacuate and come to the US to stay with LL's brother in Houston and, while I agree that his neighborhood pretty much sucks, it's a damned sight better than sitting around and waiting to wind up in the cross hairs of a bomber or rocket launcher."

For those of you in Lebanon and Northern Israel, my condolences. The US government seems to believe that it is in our nation's best interest to see that you're all bombed and rocketed for a little while longer.![]()

Arab League: “Peace in Middle East Killed”
"Arab League Secretary General Amr Musa said, “The peace process in the Middle East was killed. All mechanisms, including the Middle East Quartet (Russia, US, UN and EU) have canceled the peace process.”
The Arab League also denigrated the Israeli attacks in Lebanon by promising Lebanon “unconditional support,”
Musa said the only way to sustain the peace process was to bring the issue to the UN Security Council. Lebanese Minister of Foreign Affairs Fevzi Salluh introduced a draft text condemning Israel and supporting Lebanon to resist the Israeli occupation and asking Israel to release Lebanese detainees."
Blow back on American forces in Iraq?
"Eyes are shedding tears, and the heart feels pain and sadness for our people in Lebanon due to the bombing, terror and clear aggression that the Zionist enemy conducts and that is shielded by a number ofcountries, including the United States," Sadr said in the statement."Let it be known to everybody that we in Iraq will not sit by with folded hands before the creep of Zionism," the statement continued. "It will enslave us if we keep silent." - Mokhtada Al Sadr

"There is a real sense of panic here among people. The foreigners and young people who have never experienced war are freaked out. And the Lebanese who lived through the civil war and remember it well are freaked out. I seem to be the only one walking around, noting the closed stores and subdued traffic and thinking, “hmm, compared to Baghdad, this isn’t so bad.”
I think I was in Iraq too long.
The Israelis have been holding their fire (relatively speaking) today but there’s a rumor going round that once the foreign nationals are evacuated, they will really open up. That may be true, but we’ll see. I still think we’re going to see a ground invasion, but I think it will be limited to the southern part of the country.

Hezbollah rocket barrage kills nine in Israeli city
Lebanese guerrillas fired a relentless barrage of rockets into the northern Israeli city of Haifa today, killing nine people and wounding dozens of others, police in Israel said. A subsequent attack hit a major street in the city, causing further casualties, they added. The attack was the worst strike on Israel since violence broke out along the border with Lebanon last week after Hezbollah guerrillas captured two Israeli soldiers in a cross-border raid. Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert quickly warned there would be “far-reaching consequences” for the attack.

beloved brothers: upon them rest the hopes of every Lebanese, every
Palestinian, every Arab, every Muslim, every free and decent person in
this world, every oppressed, tortured victim of injustice, every lover
of steadfastness, courage, dignity, values, and nobility — the
characteristics they embody by their presence on the field of battle and
in their fight with this enemy, the fight of valiant heroes. I say to
them: today, after God the Highest, you are the hope of our Nation. You
are the symbol of our nobility. Our honor is in your hands...." --
