Some snips from the article:
"Every day you read the articles in the States where it's like, 'Oh, it's getting better and better,' " said Lance Cpl. Jonathan Snyder, 22, of Gettysburg, Pa. "But when you're here, you know it's worse every day."

"The reality right now is that the most dangerous opinion in the world is the opinion of a U.S. serviceman," said Lance Cpl. Devin Kelly, 20, of Fairbanks, Alaska.

Lance Cpl. Alexander Jones, 20, of Ball Ground, Ga., agreed: "We're basically proving out that the government is wrong," he said. "We're catching them in a lie."
And the classic:
Asked if he was concerned that the Marines would be punished for speaking out, Autin responded: "We don't give a crap. What are they going to do, send us to Iraq?"

Ummm....

"You know, Josh Burkeen is our rep down here in the southeast area. He lives in Colgate and travels out of Atoka. He was telling me lesbianism is so rampant in some of the schools in southeast Oklahoma that they’ll only let one girl go to the bathroom. Now think about it. Think about that issue. How is it that that’s happened to us?" - Tom Coburn, 8/31/04 (.wav Audio link)
If I were his wife, I'd definately consider....

UPDATE:

Some of you may be persuaded to consider supporting both Josh Burkeen's and esp. Tom Corburn's opponent.

Tom Corburn's campaign: http://www.coburnforsenate.com/ Note how he wraps himself in Bush/Cheney flags like a drag queen in Las Vegas. Bush s father is even pimping for Corburn's side. This man isn't our friend. And he's being groomed for more (higher) service.

Corburn's opponent is Brad Carlson. One of Corburn's attack ads:

"Will Brad Carson Stand Up for Oklahoma Values? Or Will He Continue to Vote for Taxpayer-Funded Abortions and Gay Partnerships?"

Nice eh? Anyway, drop some support Brads way if you want to help stop that homophobe from being your childs senator or president.

Or just fume.

Redefining Rights in America The Civil Rights Record of the George W. Bush Administration, 2001–2004 (PDF)

Excerpt:
"Civil rights problems remain entrenched in American society, the stubborn result of unequal treatment over time. Discrimination in housing, employment, and the voting booth, unequal educational opportunity, and other problems still stand between some Americans and true equality. Presidential leadership is necessary to break down obstacles and realize the promise of civil rights. The U.S. Commission on Civil Rights (Commission) examined the George W. Bush administration’s commitment to that end. What follows are the results of the Commission’s examination, expressed in terms of:

(1) whether civil rights enforcement is a presidential priority;
(2) federal efforts to eradicate entrenched discrimination;
(3) expanding and protecting rights for disadvantaged groups; and
(4) promoting access to federal programs and services for traditionally underserved populations.

This report finds that President Bush has neither exhibited leadership on pressing civil rights issues, nor taken actions that matched his words. The report reaches this conclusion after analyzing and summarizing numerous documents, including historical literature, reports, scholarly articles, presidential and administration statements, executive orders, policy briefs, documents of Cabinet-level agencies, federal budgets and other data."

Who wrote this?
The U.S. Commission on Civil Rights is an independent, bipartisan agency established by Congress in 1957.
It is directed to:

  • Investigate complaints alleging that citizens are being deprived of their right to vote by reason of their race, color, religion, sex, age, disability, or national origin, or by reason of fraudulent practices.

  • Study and collect information relating to discrimination or a denial of equal protection of the laws under the Constitution because of race, color, religion, sex, age, disability, or national origin, or in the administration of justice.

  • Appraise federal laws and policies with respect to discrimination or denial of equal protection of the laws because of race, color, religion, sex, age, disability, or national origin, or in the administration of justice.

  • Serve as a national clearinghouse for information in respect to discrimination or denial of equal protection of the laws because of race, color, religion, sex, age, disability, or national origin.

  • Submit reports, findings, and recommendations to the President and Congress.

  • Issue public service announcements to discourage discrimination or denial of equal protection of the laws.

Counter-Recruitment Presentation

After doing a number of concerts at various high schools around the US, I realized that I need to do this much more regularly. It has proven to me to be among the most effective ways to reach out to the general populace that I have found. Whether I have the opportunity to do more shows like this will depend on the interest of high school teachers, students and administrators (as well as other members of the community who know any such people). I hope somehow I will hear from them and have the chance to come to many more schools. Here is the gist below.

-- David

Military recruiters are an increasingly common presence in high school cafeterias around the US. In an effort to give students the opportunity to think critically about the military and the negative aspects of it that the recruiters don't talk about, David Rovics is available to come to your high school and balance the discussion with a coherent and entertaining anti-war perspective.

David is a staple musician in the US anti-war movement and has performed at hundreds of rallies, conferences and other events throughout the country -- often for dedicated crowds of a few dozen at a vigil and often for hundreds of thousands of people on the streets of New York City, Washington, DC and elsewhere.

His presentation mixes relevant information with relevant original songs. In a folksy, accessible way David will present the viewpoint that rather than a war of liberation, this is a war about oil -- Operation Iraqi Liberation, as it was briefly named by the Bush administration (thus proving that material in the modern era comes "pre-satirized" from the powers that be).

He will talk about the disillusionment of the soldiers in Iraq, provide resources about what they themselves are saying about the war (such as www.militaryproject.org), talk about the dangers of Depleted Uranium munitions, Post-Traumatic Stress and other hazards soldiers are exposed to, and tell stories about disabled and neglected veterans returned from Iraq, such as The Face of Victory.

He will discuss the apparent contradiction between the basic tenets of Christianity ("thou shalt not kill") and the seemingly irreconcileable "war without an end." David will ask the question, Who Would Jesus Bomb?

He will talk about the US, international law, the Nuremberg Principles, and individuals such as helicopter pilot, Hugh Thompson, who decided to abide by them.

He will bring the human element into the discussion about war and talk about the civilian toll with songs like Hiroshima and Song for Basra.

He will discuss the historical justifications versus the realities of wars in which the US has participated, from the Alamo to the Lusitannia to the Gulf of Tonkin.

Finally, he will provide information about groups in civil society who are involved with assisting soldiers and veterans in various ways, such as Iraq Veterans Against the War, Military Families Speak Out, Veterans for Peace, the War Resisters League, and the Central Committee on Conscientious Objectors.

Common sense says that students should be exposed to both sides of this argument. A functioning democracy requires an informed populace. A real "volunteer" military requires soldiers who know what they were actually volunteering for. To provide your school with this opportunity, contact David now, before more of your students make decisions which they may regret for the rest of their lives.
